Milton Dale Burton, 69, of Mansfield, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017, at his home. He was born November 24, 1947, in Mansfield, Ohio, to the late Marion Lew Burton and Twila Revern Brantner Burton.

Milt graduated from Mansfield Senior High School and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during the Vietnam War. He was often seen wearing a piece of clothing with a USMC emblem throughout his life. He became an officer with the Mansfield Police Department and retired as a Detective Sergeant after 29 years of service. He served a one year term as an interim sheriff for Richland County.

He married the love of his life, Rhonda Lee Sullivan, and they were married for 46 wonderful years until her passing in 2015. They enjoyed traveling and vacationing together. Milt was an avid Cleveland sports fan and a huge supporter of the OSU Buckeyes. A true social bug, he enjoyed just hanging out and catching up with his friends. He found a sense of peace in having things in a consistent order. His love for his family is his greatest legacy and he will long be remembered as a wonderful example of how to love unconditionally. They knew he genuinely cared for, loved, and wanted the absolute best for them. Milt would call his sons daily just to see how they were doing. He was affectionately known to his grandchildren as "Pap Pap" and they enjoyed being spoiled by him almost as much as he enjoyed spending time with them.

Milt is survived by two sons, Joseph (Melissa) Burton and Jason Burton (Jessica Choina); six grandchildren, Amber Burton, Cody Hughes, Baylee Burton, Joey Burton, Emily Burton and Jackson Burton; one great-grandson, Auden; a brother, Rev. Dr. Dennis (Gay) Burton; several nieces and nephews; and a number of friends made over the years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one brother, Larry Burton.

The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2017, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. Fraternal Order of Police Rites will be said at 6:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with his brother, Rev. Dr. Dennis Burton officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park with military honors presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
