Thomas G. Burns, Sr., 81, of Mansfield, passed away Monday evening, March 13, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 28, 1935, to the late George R. and Roberta (Lucas) Burns.

Tom could strike up a conversation with anyone, as he was a born storyteller who never knew a stranger. His favorite stories were those that included his many activities with family either involving sporting events or time spent at Lake Erie, as he was an avid fisherman. Tom was mechanically gifted and could fix most anything he touched and was often called upon to use his skills to repair the boat or any other project that his family could dream up.  Tom was also an excellent craftsman, creating such things as high chairs, a bookcase, and a shelf for his family. Tom was also a huge NASCAR fan, closely following the career of his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon.

Tom was a veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1952-1956 with the U.S. Air Force. He retired as a die setter from General Motors, where he worked for 32 years, and was a longtime member of UAW Local 549.  He was also a school bus driver for many years.  In his younger years, he volunteered his time as a Cubmaster and Little League coach. Tom was a longtime member of St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Burns; seven children, David (Cheryl) Burns of Thornville, Ohio; Jeffrey Burns, Patrick Burns, Audrey (Rob) Metz and Christopher Burns, all of Mansfield; Andrew (Kristin Thomas) Burns of Virginia; Thomas G. Burns, Jr. of Mansfield; and former daughter-in-law Terri Burns of Virginia; eight grandchildren, Josh, Courtney, Tom, Joe, Dusty, Derek, Dylan, and Alexx; a sister, Johanna (Charles) Bechtel of Port Clinton; two sisters-in-law, Leora Burns of Mansfield, Ann Hanrahan of Mt. Vernon, and one brother-in-law Michael “Mike”(Jo) Hanrahan of Virginia; his cat, Shadow; and his dogs, Chester and Abby.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Merl "Mike" Burns and Robert “Bob” Burns.

The family will receive friends from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2017, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church, 1630 Ashland Road, Mansfield, with Father Nelson Beaver officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park with military honors presented by the U.S. Air Force. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church, OhioHealth Hospice, or Korean War Veterans Association Scholarship Fund.
