Darryl Lynn Rafeld, age 62, died May 13, 2017, after a courageous battle against pancreatic and lung cancer. He was born July 1, 1954, the youngest son of the late James and Evelyn Rafeld of Ashland, Ohio.  He graduated from Ashland High School in 1972 and attended The Ohio State University, Mansfield branch.  He recently retired from the United States Postal Service after 28 years of service. Darryl was an avid skier, serving as a volunteer with the Ski Patrol at Snow Trails Ski Resort in Mansfield. He earned the distinction of Senior Ski Patroller, was recognized in 1979 with a lifetime achievement award for his service, and received an award for 35 years of service from the National Ski Patrol Organization. He considered the Monday night ski patrol gang his second family.

In 2006, he met and married the love of his life, Armida (Ocares), who survives him along with three brothers, Frederick (Judy) Rafeld of Ashland, Marvin (Judy) Rafeld of Loudonville, and Blake (Chris) Rafeld of Columbus; and three sisters, Patricia Malaska of Taylors, South Carolina, Karen Rafeld (Mary Ahern) of Boston, and Sharon (Lloyd) Aten of City of Green. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Darryl was a jack-of-all trades who enjoyed remodeling his house and properties, riding motorcycles, tinkering with his beloved cars, hang gliding, flying light aircraft, boating and many other interests. Fun-loving yet reserved, he never brought attention to himself, and was always a quiet presence with friends and at family gatherings. He will always be in our hearts.

The family extends its gratitude to OhioHealth Hospice for providing specialized care and especially to his twin sisters, Karen Rafeld for her continued travels to offer love and support and Sharon Aten, RN, for her guidance, loving presence and compassionate care given to Darryl and Armida.

Friends and family are invited to an informal “Gathering to Remember and Tell Stories” on Saturday, May 20, 2017, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Sugargrove Tree Farm, 1619 Township Road 1455, Ashland, OH 44805. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Darryl may be made to: Snow Trails Ski Patrol, 3100 Possum Run Road, Mansfield, OH 44903; or to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, online at www.pancan.org or at 1500 Rosecrans Ave. Ste. 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.  The Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is honored to serve the family of Darryl Rafeld.
