ASHLAND, OH-  The Ashland University football team will wrap up spring drills on Saturday evening with the annual Purple and Gold scrimmage to be played at Jack Miller Stadium/Fred Martinelli Field beginning at 7 pm.  Head coach Lee Owens who begins his 14th season says sides have already been selected.

"We took are accountability captains and we had a draft Monday night and they just picked and we're gonna let them play football for the first half based on the teams they selected so they're gonna have some fun with it."

When asked if anyone has had a good spring, Owens mentioned a couple.  "Luke Ogi from West Holmes at running back has been outstanding for us and has worked himself into a position he's close to running for the number one spot.  Cedric Frierson at outside linebacker, strong safety from Columbus has been good he is starting to get comfortable in the secondary."

For Ogi, it's been a progression.  "It's kinda brought me back down to earth coming here.  Being the big stud there (West Holmes) and you come here and it's you and a bunch of other studs that's coming here.  You have to learn the ropes and learn from older guys and build your way up."

"I came in ready to play this spring," said Frierson.  "I was ready for anything they threw at me.  Last year they asked me to play a lot of positions so I was ready this spring.  They wanted me to play strong safety so I was ready to learn the position and take anything they could throw at me."

On the spring game, Ogi says, "First I want to win, I think we've got a pretty good squad, the purple team.  I want to have a good game and try to move up the depth chart."

"I just want to finish the spring off right," says Frierson.  "it's been good so far, so may as well have a few good tackles and make plays."

As for where the head coach will be at, Owens says all over but, not so much on the sidelines.  "A lot of social for me on Saturday night, not a lot of football.  Find my way to the winning sideline at the end of the game to celebrate.  One way or the other, I'm gonna be celebrating at the end of the game."

Ashland will open the 2017 regular season on the road at Indiana of Pennsylvania on Saturday, September 2nd.
